Former NJ Governor Tells Republicans to Stop Fighting Gay Marriage

The former Republican Governor of New Jersey Christine Whitman in speaking to the Log Cabin Republicans has called for a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, and for the Republican party to remove their opposition to same-sex marriage from the GOP platform.

She argued that "civil marriage should be for everyone, and that gay couples marrying does not threaten her marriage". She went on to say that she respects that "there is a place for Conservative Christians in the party, but said that there should be a place for pro-equality Republicans as well".

Christine Whitman along with other moderate Republicans have created the Republican Leadership Council which seeks to get back to the fundamentals of the Republican party while striving for pro-LGBT, pro-choice, eco-friendly, and racial justice legislation.

Interesting, we're seeing the morphing of the Republican party. I'm rather agog at this and of McCain's campaign chief saying that we should have marriage equality.

It's almost as though I've woken up on a new planet..

Miss Whitman dose not seem to understand "irreconcilable differences". Very Naive.

David there are many people in the middle on the issue.

I'd be up for joining the RLC if it was not for the pro-choice part - that I find absolutely intolerable!

We can only hope but if you remove the anti-LGBT, anti-racial, anti-environment,.......isn't that a Democrat? Republicans certainly can't claim to have a lock on fiscal responsibility!

Mike I don't know if they are as an org pro-choice, that is one of the partners. They may have individual views but allow pro-choice people to come to the table.

Thank GOD!

By the way, there are many Christians who support legalizing same-sex marriage. I am ONE of them.
